Yarn: fingering weight sock yarn, I used Adlibris Socki Fine
Needles: 2,5mm dpns
Gauge: 5x5cm = 16 stitches x 23 rows, measured without any blocking
Size: european 38-40 (US 7,5-9, UK 5-6,5), you can easily make the foot as long or short as you want. The socks in the picture fit a 24cm foot.
Other: two cable needles
The pattern:
Cast on 66 stitches on 2,5mm dpns and join to work in the round. Start by knitting chart 1 and repeat row 1 of chart 20 times or however long you want the ribbing to be.
Knit rounds 2-7 of chart 1. Repeat each chart line twice per round.
Start knitting the leg according to chart 2, knit rounds 1-60. Repeat each chart line twice per round.
Bobble: k1,yo,k1,yo,k1 in the same stitch, turn, purl 5, turn, knit 5, turn, purl 5, turn. Pull the 2., 3., 4. and 5. stitch over the 1. stitch and slip it back to the right needle.
Now you will start the heel flap on needles 1&2 according to chart 3. Knit rows 1-17.
When the chart is done, you have 31 stitches left in the heel flap.
Repeat rows 16-17 until the flap is 32 rows tall. End with a wrong side row.
Turn the heel: Continue with the stitch pattern, knit 16, ssk, knit 1, turn.
WS: sl1wyib, purl 2, purl 2 together, purl 1, turn.
*RS: sl1wyif, knit until one stitch remains before the gap created by the turn on
the previous row, ssk, knit 1, turn.
WS: sl1wyib, purl until one stitch remains before the gap, purl 2 together, purl 1,
turn.*
Repeat *-* until all stitches have been worked, 17 stitches remain.
RS: knit 9 stitches on needle 4. This is now the beginning of the round, in the middle of the bottom of the foot.
Pick up 16 stitches from the edge of the heel flap + 1 stitch from between the needles to needles 4 and 1 = needle 4 has 26 stitches and needle 1 has 25.
Continue knitting in the round and make the gusset decreases on every 3. round as follows:
*Knit all stitches for 2 rounds on needles 1&4 and knit according to chart 4 on needles 2&3.
On the next round, on needle 1 knit all stitches until 4 remain, knit 2 together, knit 2.
Knit according to chart on needles 2&3.
On needle 4 knit 2, ssk, knit the rest of the stitches.*
Repeat *-* until you have 31 stitches for the bottom of the foot, 15 stitches on needle 1 and 16 stitches on needle 4.
Repeat *-* one more time but work the decrease only on needle 4 = 30 stitches for the bottom of the foot (15-15).
Continue by knitting all stitches on the bottom of the foot and knit the rest of the chart on needles 2&3
When the chart is done, slip the first stitch on needle 2 to needle 1, and slip the last stitch on needle 3 to needle 4.
You now have 16 stitches on each needle.
Continue like this: on needle 1 knit all stitches until 1 remains, purl 1.
on needles 2&3 knit all stitches.
on needle 4 purl 1, knit the rest of the stitches.
Keep knitting like this until the foot measures 18cm or until the pinky toe is covered.
Toe decreases:
*Decrease round: needle 1: knit until 3 stitches remain, knit 2 together, purl 1.
needle 2: ssk, knit the rest
needle 3: knit until 2 stitches remain, knit 2 together.
needle 4: purl 1, ssk, knit the rest.
Knit one round without decreasing.*
Repeat *-* until 32 stitches remain (8 stitches per needle). End with a decrease round.
Finally, knit the stitches on needle 1 so that the yarn is at the side of the foot.
Cut the yarn and leave a 30cm long tail. Move the stitches for the bottom of the foot to one needle and the stitches for the top of the foot to another, and use kitchener stitch to close the toe.
Weave in all ends to the wrong side.
Knit the other sock the same way.
