(ohje löytyy suomeksi TÄÄLTÄ)
Yarn: fingering weight, i used Opal 4-ply. The finished pair weighs around 60 grams.
Needles: 2,5mm dpns
Gauge: 21 stitches x 22 rows = 5cm of the palm pattern
Size: adult, hand circumference is 18cm. Palm measures 18cm from base of thumb to the top.
Other: a piece of scrap yarn or a stitch holder for the thumb
The pattern:
Cast on 60 stitches in colour A and divide on 4 dnps, 15 stithes/needle. Knit rounds 1-22 of rib chart. On the last round you will increase 12 stitches.
Continue knitting the mitten chart. Knit rounds 1-83.
Right hand: read chart from right to left
Left hand: read chart from left to right
The thumb hole is made on round 30.
Right hand: on needle 3 knit 2, transfer the next 14 stitches onto a stitch holder or a piece of scrap yarn, cast on 14 new stitches, knit the last 2 stitches on the needle
Left hand: on needle 2, knit the thumb hole as above
When you are done with the chart, you'll have 8 stitches left. Cut yarns, pull through the stitches and pull tight to close the hole.
The thumb:
Transfer the 14 stitches on hold back to a needle and pick up 14 stitches from the cast on edge on the other side of the hole. Pick up 2 extra stitches on both sides of the hole
= 32 stitches.
Arrange the stitches so that your first stitch will be one picked up from the edge of the hole, then the 14 stitches left to wait, then 2 picked up stitches, then the 14 stitches from the cast on edge and the last stitch will be picked up from the side.
Start knitting the thumb chart.
Right hand: read chart from right to left
Left hand: read chart from left to right
Knit the chart twice per round. On the second row of the chart you will decrease 4 stitches = 28 stitches left on the thumb.
When you are done with the chart, you will have 4 stitches left. Cut the yarn, pull through the stitches and pull tight to close the hole.
Weave in all ends on the wrong side.
